A Program for HR Managers and Supervisors Manager's Duty of Care Bullying Harassment and Abuse in the Workplace: The Laws are Changing - Be Prepared! AND Create Effective Harassment and Anti-Bullying Policy and Procedure: Beyond the Basics

The Duty of Care: the most crucial concept for all organizations for this decade!
The courts have expanded the scope of a manager's duty of care for the overall work environment. The standard for sexual harassment, bullying, workplace violence, and safe place have been consolidated by the federal courts. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that private and public organizations have a Duty of Care which is owed to both those they serve and to their employees. Anyone "in charge" of providing service to or making decisions about employees, clients, patients, students, and even customers has Duty of Care obligations. The failure to pay attention to this Duty of Care can result in personal harm and legal liability for both the organization and for the individual. Adopting the Duty of Care immunizes organizations from liability and creates a healthy, productive, profitable workplace.

    • Learn the legal definition of respectful workplace under Harassment, Abusive Workplace and Safe Place Laws
    • Gain an understanding of how the laws apply to practical, everyday situations
    • Understand each person's rights and obligations under the law
    • Understand (especially for supervisors) the steps to take upon being informed of the existence of a hostile environment in the workplace
    • Understand how to resolve situations before they harm people and generate legal action
    • Understand how to resolve situations before they harm people and generate legal action

    Sponsored by
Jefferson County Human Resource Management Association

This program presents a series of "real life" discussion examples illustrating the broad scope of workplace issues. Participants learn to analyze work situations and develop an understanding of how to identify and resolve problems.

Effective Policy and Procedure - A Must for HR Managers
A bad policy can be worse than none at all!

Bob Gregg is nationally known for his anti-harassment work and has designed the respectful workplace policies and procedures for numerous employers, government agencies, schools and universities. He has also represented plaintiffs successfully suing organizations over poorly-written and poorly-implemented policies. A policy must go beyond paper. Bob Gregg gives practical advice on implementing the policy. Perhaps more important, what to include and what not to include in your harassment policy and procedures. Learn:

    • The scope of respectful workplace policies include harassment, bullying and abusive behaviors
    • The Supreme Court standards
    • Elements of a proper policy
    • What not to include in a policy
    • Balancing the rights of prohibiting improper behavior vs. Constitutional or other protected expression
